Morning still hangs in the shadows, and the world is cool like a stone milk-house. I suspect this feeling of comfort with photographs is common.Īs a boy, I found an old photograph in my aunt’s attic and when I looked at it I inhaled a world: I smelled the zinnias, snap-dragons with coarse leaves, blue hydrangeas drooping on the lawn, insects thrumming, the early morning coolness. But snapshots have made the output of cameras safe for me. A painting, a poem can face me down as some kind of test.
